We have arrived at Friday, at last.

I hope you’re all doing okay. This has been a hell of a week.

It is link time! Let’s go.

Tomb of Queen Meresankh III (G 7530-7540)

Tomb of Queen Meresankh III (G 7530-7540)

More on the Queen here. She was the granddaughter of the Egyptian pharaoh Khufu – he of the most well-known classic pyramid.

She lived from c. 2620–2570 BC.

A lot of you saw last week’s virtual tour of Rameses VI and sent me htis, so thank you. It’s amazing.

This Word Does Not Exist

This Word Does Not Exist

“This Word Does Not Exist uses an artificial intelligence model named GPT-2 to invent new English words.”

When I visited it it generated:

noun.

upflank

up·flank

  1. a supporting part sideways “the upflank of the bay”
  2. a word that does not exist; it was invented, defined and used by a machine learning algorithm.

Sort of making the rounds. If it becomes somewhat popular, I wonder if we’ll see these terms enter common usage.

The Remaking of Steve Buscemi

The Remaking of Steve Buscemi

“Steve Buscemi has seen it all. He was hit by a car and a bus as a kid, was once stabbed in a bar fight, volunteered as a firefighter during 9/11, and somewhere along the way became one of the most accomplished film actors of his generation. And then tragedy struck: In 2019, Buscemi lost his wife of over 30 years. In a rare interview, Hollywood’s most beloved misfit opens up about anxiety, loss, and the hard work of getting through it all.”

This is a hell of a read. He’s an impressive figure.

Song Trivia 2

Song Trivia 2

Basically “name that tune / name that artist”, but multiplayer, and multiple choice (which makes it possibly too easy.)

This is up my alley.

Well there you go. Links! On Friday! We did it you guys!

I hope your weekend is most excellent.

See you in seven days. Hang in there. No joke.

Holy crap it’s Friday already!

My week got busy, so I am a bit late posting today’s links. But also: what is time right now?

Here we go.

Pharaoh Ramesses VI Tomb – Matterport 3D Showcase

Pharaoh Ramesses VI Tomb - Matterport 3D Showcase

AKA “KV9”

More on the Pharaoh here, who reigned from 1145–37 BCE

There are some fantastic, extremely well-photographed views inside this tomb.

EveryMask

EveryMask

“ISRU COVID-19 PPE: A DIY face mask designed with as little as possible, for as many people as possible.”

This is actually ingenious!!

fyi: “ISRU” is NASA’s “In-Situ Resource Utilization” protocol for creating industry standard items using readily available items.

Inside the Flour Company Supplying America’s Sudden Baking Obsession

Inside the Flour Company Supplying America’s Sudden Baking Obsession

Suuuper interesting. I’ve never seen a time when there was literally a huge retail run on everything! It’s so weird. But especially flour and yeast.

Making the rounds, unsurprisingly.

Orb.Farm

Orb.Farm

“This is a virtual ecosystem where different species of creature can live, grow and die as part of a self-contained food chain.

Please:

Play

Experiment

& Observe”

It takes some practice to get everything to survive. Pretty interesting little virtual creation.

Crocs: KFC Edition

Apparently 100% real. Jeeeeeee-zuss.

And no: do not want.

Thanks, but no.

No seriously no thanks.

And there we go! Friday: Linked!!

Hang in there everybody. We’ll get through this. Stay safe.

See you next Friday!

Welcome back Friday, everybody!

Where I live, it’s supposed to be warm, sunny, lovely. It has not been. Which during lockdown turns out to be okay.

But come on! 🙂

So here we go…

Penguin Classics Cover Generator

Penguin Classics Cover Generator

[self explanatory]

So simple! So recognizable! I love it.

The Hyper-Detailed Imaginary Cities Of Ben Sack

The Hyper-Detailed Imaginary Cities Of Ben Sack

“Benjamin Sack makes amazing, large-scale pen and pencil drawings of fantastic cities, both real and imaginary.”

Holy crap yes he sure does. These are… ridiculous! (In good ways.)

Nature Mixer

Nature Mixer

“A customizable and immersive audio-visual nature experience to help you relax”

A pretty great little time waster, especially now.

SPACEX – ISS Docking Simulator

SPACEX - ISS Docking Simulator

This is alleged to be pretty close to the actual interface used by real astronauts to train to dock the real Dragon Crew craft to the ISS.

It’s definitely challenging. You need some patience.

Note: most ISS docking is performed 100% automatically. This is only used when that process is broken or unavailable.

And there we go!

Fridaaaaay!

Have a great Friday and a lovely (“long”?) weekend.

It’s Friday!

This week felt fast for me. I like measuring the weeks by Fridays.

And it’s links time! Let’s goooooo…

Jukebox

Jukebox

“We’re introducing Jukebox, a neural net that generates music, including rudimentary singing, as raw audio in a variety of genres and artist styles. We’re releasing the model weights and code, along with a tool to explore the generated samples.”

This is really incredible. Lyricaly super confusing but musically, melodically, and from an arrangement point of view: just fantastic!

The Frank Sinatra one cracks me up. It for some reason associates “Christmas Time” with hot tubs, and then that’s all he wants to sing about. Super strange.

Listening Together

Listening Together

“Two people starting to play the same song, at exactly the same time.”

It’s a tool from Spotify and I kind of love it.

This Website Will Self Destruct

This Website Will Self Destruct

That is… unless you post a message on it (anonymously.)

Sweet little idea.

Rocketpult

Rocketpult

Fire the rocket to get started an dthen launch your projectile.

Once it’s in the air, fire side boosters to guide it to a specific target.

Suuuper challenging but a really fun game. Addictive.

There we go! That went fast too.

Have a great, safe, calm Friday and a wonderful, safe, healthy weekend.

Happy Friday everybody!

You guys we did it! Friday!

I hope you are all doing well. Staying safe. Staying healthy.

And now: some Friday Links!

Akinbeat

Akinbeat

“Show me music artists similar to…”

This works shockingly well. I gave it some pretty obscure artists and it correctly came back with a huge playlist of similar-sounding other artists. Sometimes via genre, sometimes artists from the same record label, who collaborated with the same producers, etc.

Pictured is my search for artists similar to Daniel Caesar. Not bad.

Well done.

Kevin Kelly: 68 Bits of Unsolicited Advice

These are dynamite.

Somewhat making the rounds. Some genuinely valuable suggestions here.

Wealth, shown to scale

Wealth, shown to scale

All you have to do is scroll to the right, and then gradually become shocked, depressed, and eventually enraged.

Covid Blaster

Covid Blaster

A purposely impossible arcade shooter. 🙂 If you don’t shoot the little corona viruses fast enough, they multiply exponentially.

Super frustrating!

Wash your hands 🙂

And that’s that! Fridayyyyyyy!!!

Have a great weekend everybody. Stay safe!!
