Oh hey there Friday people!

And look at that: no more Fridays in February. Huh!

I hope you are very well.

It is links time!

Read Only Memories

Read Only Memories

A neat little tribute to Daft Punk, who announced last week they were disbanding.

Sgt Pepper Photos

Sgt Pepper Photos

“My first search was for Olympic swimmer and Tarzan actor Johnny Weissmuller (the picture behind Ringo and Paul). When I eventually located the source image, with the unexpected chimp and horn, it was so bizarre and out of context it piqued my interest.”

A very deep dive by obsessive researcher Chris Shaw.

Ten Years Ago

Ten Years Ago

This site will show you what most of the major news websites featured exactly ten years ago.

I mean last year felt like 5 years. Reading this feels like an entirely different era.

Iceberger

Iceberger

“Draw an iceberg and see how it will float.”

Actually super interesting. Icebergs don’t always float the way you might think.

Inspired by a Twitter thread by Megan Thompson-Munson.

And there we go! Alllllll linked up!

Have an excellent weekend, and Happy Friday!

Welcome to Friday!

What a week!

I hope you’re all safe and warm and well. 2020 still has some spill-over effects, it feels like.

Links time!!

I Miss My Bar

I Miss My Bar

A website that lets you create the audio background of a functioning drinking establishment from the “before times”.

I do miss my bar 🙁

The Nostalgia Machine

The Nostalgia Machine

Note: I am not a fan of nostalgia.

Enter a year to hear music (primarily pop) hits from that year. (using YouTube.)

Only goes from 1952 to 2015.

Still: pretty comprehensive!

Also: join me in playing “not available in your country” bingo.

Stinky Candle Company

Stinky Candle Company

[self explanatory]

Note: Not all of them! Christmas Tree! Pear!

For me the most entertaining ones are Mary Jane, Body Odour, Rotting Flesh, and “2020 Candle” (I don’t even want to know.)

Hopp Zee

Hopp Zee

A fun little platformer. Challenging!

We did it you guys! Friday Link! Whuhoo!

Have an excellent weekend everybody.

See you next Friday.

Oh hello there Friday.

And where I live we get a long weekend! After the past week (busy) I definitely need one. The next few weeks are going to be crazy busy on my end (fair warning.)

But here we go!

Unreal Engine: Meta Humans

Unreal Engine: Meta Humans

“Bringing compelling real-time digital humans to life is incredibly challenging and time-consuming. It can take months of research, costly scanning equipment, and an army of tech artists. What if we could make the process radically simpler, faster, and more scalable—without compromising on quality?”

Unreal has, for many decades now, created a platform that increasingly makes more and more realistic looking film and videogame environments. Now they’re focusing on the characters, their faces, their body movement, etc.

This is a fascinating set of developments.

Making the rounds. Deservedly so. Just imagine the sheer volume of work this took to achieve. Phew.

City Guesser

City Guesser

“City Guesser is a geography based browser game that strives to provide an exceptional travel and guessing experience. City Guesser launched on August 13th, 2020, and welcomes thousands of geography-enthusiasts each day.”

Since none of us can, you know, ACTUALLY visit other international cities…

A great little time waster / educational tool.

Rubiksolve

Rubiksolve

“Input Your Rubik’s Cube Configuration”

“Solve your Rubik’s Cube simply. No terminology, memorization, or shenanigans. Enter your colors, and press solve and we’ll get you back to normal. Enjoy!”

This is honestly a pretty great idea.

I’ve been solving Rubik’s cubes since I was gifted one way back in 1984. It took me two years to figure it out and now I just do it to clear my mind.

I think more people should learn how to solve it. It’s very satisfying.

OffroadJS

OffroadJS

A super challenging, mayyyybe frustrating offroad jeep driving… thing.

I suck at it but a few subscribers sent it in, so have at it.

Huzzah! We have achieved Friday Links!

I hope your day is good. And warm. And safe. And cozy.

See you next Friday!

Yeaaaah it’s Friday!

This week went quickly for me. Hopefully for you as well.

I hope you’re doing as well as you can. This year is still a struggle.

And now! To the links!

Bops.fm

Bops.fm

Load the site, pick a year, it sends you to a random song from that year. Click the same year: random, different song from that year. Repeat for any year between 1950 and 2010

Kind of cool!

Pandemic Graphics Archive

Pandemic Graphics Archive

“Today, Coronavirus signs, are often dismissed and perceived as an enforcement. However this now everyday visual language of our lives globally, has provided and communicated the new ‘normal’.”

This is true!

My city has some very stylized iconography around this whole topic.

Reconstructing the Menu of a Pub in Ancient Pompeii

Reconstructing the Menu of a Pub in Ancient Pompeii

“Eat like a first-century Roman, using recent archaeological discoveries as your guide.”

This is an extremely deep dive and I am here for it.

Lots of long-simmering broths and meat.

Gear Grappler

Gear Grappler

Interesting game.

Click to swing on to a gear, and then from there try to do it to another gear.

But it moves weirdly, and you can get snagged.

More fun than it sounds.
