Hiding Images in Plain Sight: The Physics Of Magic Windows

Hiding Images in Plain Sight: The Physics Of Magic Windows

“I recently made a physical object that defies all intuition. It’s a square of acrylic, smooth on both sides, totally transparent. A tiny window. But it has the magic property that if you shine a flashlight on it, it forms an image.”

Matt Ferraro has created an interesting thing and has the physics and other data to describe how he did it.

This has been making the rounds. It’s a dense read, but worth it.

SVG Wave Generator

SVG Wave Generator

“Create SVG waves for your designs”

Simple controls, lots of colour and layout options, and it generates the SVG code for you right there.

Pretty specific little tool but really well made.

How I Experience Web Today

How I Experience Web Today

Features every single possible interruptive feature we all see every day while just trying to read a simple web page. The only thing they missed was an auto-playing video that also follows you when you scroll.

I hate that this is now the norm for all websites. We’re interrupted to death.

Dodge

Dodge

WASD keys to carefully avoid oncoming obstacles without falling off the narrow track. It reminds me of Super Monkey Ball, but faster, and with just a red cube as your character. Super challenging!

Well there we go. Allll linked up.

I hope your Friday is excellent, and your weekend is calm and happy.

Stay safe.

Nestflix

Nestflix

“Fictional movies within movies? Got ‘em. Fake shows within shows? You bet. Browse our selection of over 450 stories within stories.”

This has been making the rounds and it honestly is quite an accomplishment.

Some greats in here. “Gandhi II”?! Good lord!

Uniq Hotels

Uniq Hotels

“Against all boring hotels!”

I know we’re not all traveling again just yet. But this is a cool little tool. It includes custom setups in the middle of jungles, in the midst of forest land, etc. Some really interesting places.

3D Periodic Table

3D Periodic Table

Presented by Google.

Choose any element and see a 3d representation of its atomic model plus details about how the element is used.

Making the rounds.

Balloon Bump

Balloon Bump

Inflate and release as balloon so that it bumps into another balloon with the same value. And repeat.

Challenging!

Hooray! Friday Links! All set for the weekend.

Welcome back to Friday… the thirteenth (!) everybody.

My city is back to 90% heavy rain again. Bleah. But it’s still August, still Summer, still Friday.

And it’s link time!!

YouGlish

YouGlish

This is an amazing, weird little site.

You type in a phrase, and this site finds one or more YouTube videos where someone said that phrase, and even plays from a few moments before the phrase was said.

This is a crrrrazy piece of tech. I kind of love it.

The Photography of Frank Oscar Larson – 1896-1964

The Photography of Frank Oscar Larson - 1896-1964

With a particular focus on the mid-1950s in New York City. Fantastic.

A good synopsis and gallery also available here.

Bauhaus Generator

Bauhaus Generator

Very basic interface. You can choose the color palette and just generate randomly. I found myself wishing I could “go back” to ones I generated three steps ago.

Well done!

h/t Kottke.

Endless Arrow

Endless Arrow

Aim and fire, then guide the arrow. Avoid obstacles. Hit bullseyes. Avoid cows.

It’s pretty basic but I like it.

Huzzah! Friday links… Allll set.

Happy Friday! And I hope your weekend feels longer than it actually is.

See you in a week!

KidPix.app

KidPix.app

An online version of this late-80s / early-90s kids artwork software, crafted in html5. It has all the sound effects and everything.

Created by vikrum5000. That Twitter thread has all the feels.

Virtual Visits

Virtual Visits

“I know a lot of us would like be able to visit other places right now. It looks like we won’t be able to do that for a while, but we can at least pretend!”

A comprehensive list of virtually “visitable” locations including museums, landmarks, drives, etc.

I kind of wish I had found this earlier. Meticulously curated. Nicely done.

VidEarth

VidEarth

Find a part of the earth, click on a dot, play the video that results.

A compendium of walking videos for cities and towns all over the world. fantastic concept.

Teleport Jumper

Teleport Jumper

Teleport through walls and floors to complete levels. You only get three tries per level.

Sounds easy. And it is, at first…

And so there we go! Friday Links alllll wrapped up!

Happy Friday! And have an amazing weekend.
